Beautiful places in Kolkata

I have been staying in this nice city 'Kolkata' since last five years. Though due to my busy professional life I get hardly enough time to roam around the city but still then I managed to visit some wonderful places in this 'City of Joy' in my spare time.

Dakshineswar Kali Temple

Dakshineswar Kali Temple is situated in Dakshineswar close to Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal. It’s a Hindu place of worship located on the eastern bank of River Hooghly. Bhavatarini is the presiding deity of this temple. Bhavatarin is an aspect of Kali. Constructed by Rani Rashmoni, a devotee of Goddess Kali and a philanthropist in the year 1855, the temple is popular for its association with Ramakrishna, a mystic of the 19th century Bengal.

The compound of Dakshineswar temple consists of a huge courtyard which surrounds the temple with rooms along with the boundary walls. Together with the 9-spired main temple, there 12 shrines dedicated to Shiva located along the river front, a temple dedicated to Radha and Krishna, a bathing ghat on the river and a shrine dedicated to Rani Rashmoni. A chamber located in the north-western corner beyond the Shiva temple is said to be the place where Ramakrishna spent a significant part of his life.

Birla Mandir

Birla Mandir is a Hindu Temple constructed by the distinguished industrialist family- the Birla. The temple is located on Asutosh Chowdhury Avenue, Ballygunge and is one of the most visited tourist attraction of Kolkata. Every day the temple remains open from 5.30 am to 11 am in the morning and then 4.30 Pm to 9 PM in the evening. Every Janmashtami, on the birthday of Lord Krishna, many devotees comes to visit the temple from different places to pay their tribute and respect to the deities.

The construction work started in the year 1970. It took about twenty six years to complete this entire structure. Finally on February 21, 1996, Swami Chidanandaji Maharaj did the Pran Prathistha in the morning. Dr. Karan Sigh inaugurated the Birla Mandir on the same day.

Victoria Memorial

Officially known as Victoria Memorial Hall, is a memorial building constructed in memory of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. This memorial building is located in Kolkata, India which is the capital of the state of West Bengal. At present, Victoria Memorial Hall serves as a museum and is ranked amongst the most popular tourist attractions of the city.

Sir William Emerson who was the then President of the British Institute of Architects had drew up and designed the plan of this memorial. The whole construction work was delegated to Messrs. Martin & Co of Calcutta. The superintending architect in charge was Vincent J Esch.

History:

In January 1901 after the death of Queen Victoria, the then Victoria of India, Lord Curzon suggested the setting up of an appropriate and fitting monument which would be colossal, airy, splendid and grand bounded by gorgeous garden.

Lord Curzon suggested it would be a ‘historical museum’ where public would see before them the statues and pictures of great men who played an important role in this country, especially the history of Calcutta. People of India and the princes responded bigheartedly to the appeal made by Lord Curzon and the cost in constructing this monument which amounted to 1 crore and 5 lakhs of rupees was wholly derived from the voluntary contributions.

On January 4, 1906, King George V, who was the then Prince of Wales laid the foundation stone. However, it was officially opened to the public in the year 1921.

Birla Planetarium

Birla Planetarium is one of the biggest museums in Asia. This museum is a prominent attraction of Kolkata, the “City of Joy“. It was in the year 1962 when Birla Planetarium came into existence. All credit to Birla Education Trust for constructing this beautiful center of communication, science, and environment.

Wordpress :: different files of a theme folder and their uses

Template system is a great feature which is associated with wordpress. Users may have their multiple themes stored inside 'wordpress/wp-content/themes/' folder so that they can select and activate one of them at a time.
Wordpress package comes up with two in-built themes ( twentyten & twentyeleven). Beside these two theme folders if users need more then they may download free themes from websites like simplewpthemes.com, freewpthemes.net etc and upload those themes to this path 'wordpress/wp-content/themes/'. As soon as they will activate one of these folders through admin panel they will get a new look & feel for their website. However users with having bit knowledge in html/css may also build their custom theme. PHP knowledge will be an added advantage in this regard.

Before building their custom theme they should know about the different files of one of the in-built theme folders (twentyten or twentyelven) and their uses. Those files consists of both html and php codes where php codes are responsible for functionalities, html codes are responsible for providing the required format. Below are the list of some files with their uses in wordpress:

header.php : This file contains the content of header section of the web pages. It is included into page.php, index.php etc. Generally the link to css file, javascript file(s) are added in this file. In most cases top menu bar, website logo, home page banner etc are defined in this file.
footer.php : This file contains the content of footer section of the web pages. Generally copy right information and footer links are defined in this file.
sidebar.php : Optionally this file is used when there is a need to display content in either left sidebar or right sidebar of the web pages. Generally left menu or right menu is defined in this file.
index.php : This file is responsible for showing posts which are created by admin through backend. So in wordpress blog is generated though this file.
page.php : This file is responsible for showing the content of pages which are created by admin through backend. It is also a template file as it provides a ceratin look and feel to the pages which are created by admin dynamically.
single.php : This file is responsible for showing individual post on a separate page apart from blog page.
category.php : This page shows all the posts of a particualar category.
404.php : This file shows the error message when a page is not found which is searched by a website visitor. Users can modify the content of this file to show their custom messages to the website visitors.
search.php : This file shows the link of posts and pages as search result when website visitors use different keywords in the searchbox to get their desired result.

Wordpress :: build your custom theme

In my previous post I have explained how to install wordpress and it’s basic use. I have given an initial idea about plug-in and template system of wordpress.

Now I am going to explain you how one can build his/her own custom theme and install it through admin panel of wordress provided he/she must have basic knowledge in html/css.  If he/she is completely new to HTML/CSS I would like to him/her to go through this tutorial to have some knowledge on HTML/CSS .

Wordpress theme is nothing but a bunch of PHP files, CSS files, images and optionally javascript files which are bundled together inside a folder. Each php file may consist php code (server side scripting which are responsible for functionalities) along with html code (html is the markup language which is responsible for creating place holder for content, image etc). Similarly each css file consists style definition for html elements like paragraph i.e. p, heading i.e. h1, h2 etc. So all these files & images work together to provide a certain look & feel to the front-end of the website.

By default wordpress comes up with two default themes i.e. ‘twentyten’ & ‘twentyeleven’ respectively. One needs to go through these folders thoroughly before going for creating his/her own custom theme.

Below are some tips which may help you in creating your own custom theme:

  • You must keep your template (html/css) ready which you are going to integrate into your custom theme.
  • Copy one of the default themes for ex. ‘twentyten’ from themes folder of wordpress package (path wordpress/wp-content/themes )  and paste it in some local place of your computer and rename it like ‘mynewtheme’.
  • Replace the css file i.e. style.css within your theme folder ‘mynewtheme’ with the css file of your template and images folder with the images folder of your template respectively. This means now in your theme folder ‘mynewtheme’ you have your css file and images folder as of your new template.
  • You notice there are some files like header.php, footer.php, sidebar.php, index.php, page.php within ‘mynewtheme’ folder and those are the files which are mostly required to build your custom theme. Open all these mentioned files in an html editor like DreamWeaver.
  • Copy the html of header section from the template (which you want to be in header section of your web page) and put it into header.php file. This means replace the code of header.php with the copied code from the template which is meant for header section. Within head tag you will find elements like link, script etc where you need to do some adjustment. Basically link element is used to link to an external style sheet i.e. link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css" /. Here what you have to do is to append a php snippet with the path of css file so that it will point to the absolute path of the css file of the theme. So replace the link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css" / with link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="bloginfo(‘template_url’); /style.css" /. Do the similar changes with the element of script. If your script element is something like script type="text/javascript" src=”example.js”  then change it to script type="text/javascript" src=”bloginfo(‘template_url’); /example.js” . Before the /head add this piece of php snippet i.e. wp_head();  . This is all about tweaking of header.php file. Now save this file.
  • Copy the code of footer section from template and put it into footer.php within theme folder ‘mynewtheme’.
  • Similarly copy the code of sidebar section (if there is any for sidebar of the webpage ) and put it into the footer.php file within new theme folder ‘mynewtheme’.
  • In index.php file you will notice such code snippets like get_header();  , get_footer();  etc. Here get_header() is the function which includes header.php file into index.php file. Similarly get_footer() includes the footer.php and get_sidebar() includes the sidebar.php . You need to place those code snippets as per you need your code for header , footer & sidebar segments should be included to index.php file.

I think this is all about working with your custom theme folder. Now upload the entire folder into the themes folder of wordpress, activate it through admin panel and enjoy the theming.

Wordpress :: the most popular CMS

Wordpress

Those who have absolutely no knowledge in web development and still want to have a website with features like content management and bogging perhaps Wordpress will be the best choice for them. It’s already a built-in package and freely available for downloading from wordpress.org. After downloading the package users need to unzip the downloaded folder and upload the entire files and folders within ‘wordpress’ folder to their server. They have to create a database in their server which will be needed during installation process.

Suppose users have already installed WAMP or XAMP in their system (here I assume WAMP is installed in C: drive) then ‘localhost’ is their root directory. They may upload the entire files & folders which are within ‘wordpress’ to this path c://wamp/www . In this case to view the website users have to type only ‘localhost’ in their web browsers. But if users don’t want to upload files & folders directly into ‘www’ folder instead they want to create another folder for ex. ‘mywordpress’ within ‘www’ they can do so.  In this case to view the website they have to type ‘localhost/mywordpress’ in their web browsers.

As soon as users type the path in their web browsers they will be asked to follow the installation process step by step. In this process they need to enter database name, database user name, database password, database prefix so that all the necessary tables will be created automatically. In the last step they have to enter admin user name, admin password along with other information to complete the installation process. This admin login credential will be used later by website administrator in order to login into admin panel of the website.

There are links in the admin panel to create categories of posts, posts, pages etc. By default the posts which will be created by admin will be displayed on the home page which is known as blogging (so by default home page is the blog page in wordpress). Pages which will be created by admin will be shown in the front end of the website and those pages will be automatically linked from the top menu of the website.

Wordpress has many features including a plug-in architecture and a template system. This means at a time admin panel can accommodate numerous templates (designs) and plug-ins (which are betterly known as Add-ons). Template or theme can provide a certain look & feel to the front-end of the website while plug-in can provide the ability to customize the functionality. By default there only two themes are available in admin panel and admin has to activate one of them. But admin can download free ready-made themes and install them through admin panel to use them as well. Users having little knowledge in HTML/CSS can also build their own customized theme in order install them into wardress.

In my next posts I will explain in detail how to build your own customized themes.

Does Sachin deserve Bharat Ratna?

Sachin Tendulkar Bharat Ratna
Twenty three years ago when a young kid named Sachin Ramesh Tendulka of 16 years old from Bandra (Mumbai) started playing cricket for the nation, no one could even imagine that one day this young kid would reach such a height of success that other can only dream of. For his indomitable passion for the game not only he has been able to play for so long till now, also during this journey he has bagged many more stupendous personal as well as team achievements. He has been chasing his dream to be the best ever player of the game and he has been successful in this regard. More than 15000 runs both in test & ODIs and highest numbers of centuries in both test and ODIs are more enough to describe his caliber as the ever best batter that the game has produced so far. He added another feather to his illustrious cap recently when he scored 100th ton in his international career.

He has been contributing tremendously into team’s success may it be test series wins on foreign soils or world cup win on home soil in 2011. For his outstanding performances through out these years he has got so many distinct recognitions like his nation’s highest sports award i.e. ‘Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna’ , international cricket council’s highest award i.e. ‘ICC player of the Year’ and also highest award given by bible of cricket i.e. ‘Wisden player of the year’ and so on. After winning almost every accolade in the book, there is one recognition that still eludes him - the Bharat Ratna – India’s highest Indian civilian honor.

Here the question arises does Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar really deserve this highest civilian honor of his nation? As this honor is meant for the people who have scarified their life for the upliftment of the society working in field of economy, cultural, educational, scientific etc, is there a serious need to tweak the rules in order to bestow the honor on Sachin? If I am not a hypocrite (I hope I am not) my answer is a big ‘NOOOO’.

This is why I don’t think Sachin does not deserve this award is:
After all Sachin is a professional entertainer. He has been playing for the country in return of taking money. Every act of Sachin in public life is for money... advertisement etc. Sachin may provide his fan a healthy entertainment, amuse them for sometime, but his contribution to his field of mastery will bring least changes in the real life of the people of his country. But the people who have been working relentlessly in the field of science, medicine, peace, education, economy that a life of common people is related to, in order to bring the changes in the real life of people deserve this highest honor more than Sachin Tendulkar. It will be utmost disrespect to those people who set rule for deserving candidate for this honor if we try to tweak this very rule to pave the way for someone like Sachin. After all Sachin may be the ever best player of the game but he is not bigger than rule, system and country.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul : The unsung hero of Caribbean cricket

I remember many years ago I have read this line from a news paper i.e. "Brian Lara is a moody singer where Shivnarine Chanderpaul is an all time customer". Realizing the feat that Chanderpaul has achieved over the years with his sheer determination , I don't see no wrong saying in that line. In a time when Caribbean cricket is passing through lot of troubles and hazard ness which includes inner fighting between players and board over payment issues, Chanderpaul is playing the role of torchbearer of the game which legacy has been laid by game's great like lord Clive Lloyd, Garry Sobers, Sir Vivian Richards, Malcolm Marshall etc.

Seeing the pathetic ness of Caribbean cricket, many believed that Brian Lara's retirement could bring the end to the existence of cricket in Caribbean island completely, because of the lack interest of the young kid to choose the game as their career. But it's due to Chanderpaul, whose first love has always been to put on the island's cap proudly and who ignored many more lucrative offers to play in foreign leagues, cricket is evolving to restore back it's past glory. Now-a-days I see lot of promising young talents like Kevin Pollard, Bravo cousins, Darren Sammy and many more who can lift the level of the game in this Island, must have inspired by great Chanderpaul in any phase of their life.

I remember when Chanderpaul started his international career was bit a slow starter. He had many flaws in his techniques because of his chest-on standing position. If I am not wrong his critics were more vocal for his shuffling to offside by exposing the leg stump. But with the passing of time he has been able to develop his game by covering up all those grey areas in his techniques. He has been evolved as a great player in both test and ODI cricket and his outstanding records in these two versions of game are evident of this fact. He has scored around 10000 runs in both test & ODIs with good averages. He is on his path to be among the Hall of Fame cricketers.

Despite of his superb individual contribution to the game he has been polite and humble throughout his career both on and off the field. He is one of the sportsmen who speaks less and do more with his business. I have hardly seen him engaging himself either in verbal abuse with players of opposite teams or speaking uselessly about anything off the field. He is a kind of guy who wants to shy away from media, glamour and tends to remain focused on his own business.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been a perfect ambassador of the game for his endless love and indomitable spirit for the game. He is a role model for many youngsters of his era who wants to play cricket for the sake of pride and not for the money. To be Sachin Tendulkar one needs to be God gifted (which is easy ) but to be Shivnarine Chanderpaul one must have to strive relentlessly to chase his goal with sheer determination, discipline and diligence.

None is escaped from problems

In my childhood I thought people who are enjoying stardoms are far from real word problems. They don’t need to think for their daily bread and butter. They are living in another earth where problem can never touch any of any of its belongings. But gradually my perceptions got changed and I came to know that every people on this earth are bound to some sort of problems even if our so called celebrities. Cricketers are having problems of retaining their places in team, actors are scaring of losing big assignments, parents are worrying to get their daughters married, students are finding themselves in severe completion to get berth in universities, executives are under tremendous pressure to achieve their targets, politicians are scaring of losing their seats, graduates are desperate to get jobs etc. So the conclusion is no one in this earth is escaped from problems and some how bound to it. Then how life is precious if it’s full of problems?

But I can say human life is worth living as it’s full of problems. Life is enjoyable for them who know how to deal with the problems in better way. Once you get to learn the acts of fighting problems, life will be no more burdens for you; rather you would love to take challenges. To me life means entering a new set of problems after solving the previous set of problems. We must have to get ready for upcoming challenges in our life by knowing this very fact that problems may knock the door at any point of time.

Fighting with problems doesn’t guarantee you success always. Some people links happiness in life to success, but it’s not true. In life success and failure are equally important. That’s why it is said: ‘Failure is the pillar of successes’. People who are determined they learn lessons from their past mistakes and try to do better in their next attempts. So failure doesn’t not mean the end of the life, rather it would be a call for better preparation for next time. See what happened to Sourav Gangually in recent past. This southpaw from west Bengal was ousted from captaincy as well as from the team. The entire nation stood against him. The media, the board and even if his own mentor started to say against him. But thanks to his guts and determination which saw him the way back to team again. He prepared hard and utilized the occasion to his level best in order to make one of the greatest came back in Indian sports history. Not only he returned but banged in his own style which forced his critics to change their views against him. So sometimes failure changes the rest of life because failure can only increase the appetite of success.

Even if you failed from time to time you have to interpret it in other way. May be that was not your cup of tea. That’s not your failure; you tried with lot ways which didn’t work for you. Definitely you are destined with other mission and you need to go for accomplishing this. Had Sachin Ramesh Tedulkar been good in studies, we would have to be deprived from witnessing such a master batsman as he is. Studies were not his cup of tea rather he was more destined to cricket. Thanks God he identified and picked his goal at very early age.

So life is meant for living it in the way you can enjoy it most. Some points are to remember :

  • Success and failure are equally important in some one’s life. You need to learn the lessons from failure and regroup your inner resources for better future preparation.
  • Don’t think yourself inferior to other. If some one is doing better than you in one discipline you can also beat him in other discipline. Just believe that you are more destined to the later job.
  • Make it sure that no one is stealing laugh from you. You are here to enjoy your life to the maximum extent. For anyone or for anything you shouldn’t stop laughing.
  • Problems come and go through out the life. But the must import thing is keeping yourself cool whatever the situation may be. Try to feel easy even if in the hardest moments in your life.
  • Find the reasons of discomforts and try to address the issues immediately. If you still believe you can’t then get out of it immediately and search for your own comfort zone.

So friends I hope you would love to accept challenges in your life and never try to run away from your problems.

This is national interest or something else

Finally left withdrew it's support from UPA Government on nuclear issue. Mr. Manmohan Singh is under immense pressure to save his Government. Political parties which were known as enemies of congress party in recent past are now coming forward to support the Government on this contentious issue. They will vote in favor of Government when opposition will bring no confidence motion on the floor of parliament probably on 11th August. I'm no more interested to delve into details of technicalities involved with the N' deal, because I have very little knowledge in this. But in this present situation I clearly see how all the vested interested are coming together for each other's rescue in the name of safeguarding national interest.

Take example of Samajwadi Party(SP). I couldn't resist myself from suspecting the intention of SP to support it's long time political rival Congress on the same issue. SP's chief Mulayam Singh and Amar Singh made it clear that this was only honorable Kalamji whose valuable references changed their mind for giving support to N' deal. If this is true then why they have waited for such a long time to support the deal? People of India know it very well how dedicated this party is for national interest. In UP they are playing politics of caste and racism. They are giving tickets to dreaded criminal who are accused of several cases of murder, extortion, kidnapping etc. So why suddenly they changed their minds to support N' deal ? Is it for national interest ?

The reason is obvious. In UP their arch rival BSP is running the Government. Many cases are rolling against political leaders of their party. They hope if they support the Government in center then in return home ministry can influence the verdict of those cases in their favor. They are agree to support but from the outside like the leftist used to do. Which clearly reflects the mere opportunistic aspect of this party.

Then take the example of former prime minister H.D Deve Gowda's party - Janata(S). This party own only three seats in the last Lok Sabha election, two were from Karnataka and one was from Kerala. Later the MP from Kerala withdrew his support from the party when Gowda's party was ready to go for happy marry with BJP in the state. Now being the largest party in state assembly BJP is ruling the state. Studying this situation very well Gowda has proposed to support the Government in parliament from his side. As now one one seat is important for UPA Government to prove the majority, Gowda may gain some political advantage in this situation.

It's better not to speak on our most popular rail way minister Mr. Lalu prasad Yadav in this context, otherwise story will be so long to read.

Wimbledon 2008 and my retrospection

As a sports loving guy, I have fixation towards tennis. When I was on class 8th I came to know about this game and became a crazy follower since then. I can only recall those old days when I used to watch this game with my father on our black & white television. In my initial days I was unable to understand the pros & cons of the game but I liked to watch because the efforts and skill involved with this game is awesome. French open and Wimbledon were two of my favorite tournaments because both of these tournaments were played in quick succession, both the tournaments were held when we enjoyed our holidays after exams and timing was also perfect to watch the game (evening time in India). I remember I started to follow the game when players like Jim courier, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi came to lime light and Boris Baker's glorious reign was about to be over. When Pete started to dominate the circuit, by that time I was fully familiar this game. That period of time witness a rising star of India namely Liander paes. I still remember his uncanny ability and skill to win all most all matches he played in Davis cup for India. partnering Ramesh krishan they both have won some good matches for India. One of their glorious victroy was against France in 1993 world group quarterfinal. In that quarter final match Liander managed to defeat players like Henrey Leconte who was having very good ATP rank that time. I'm feeling very much pity for Liander because despite of having such caliberity he could not excel himself to a force in singles category of the game. How ever I have witnessed so many great things which I can cherish for ever. Great rivalry between Pete and Andre on all courts, rivalry between Goran Ivanisevic and Pete in Wimbledon are still alive in my mind. Goran was one of the moody player and his style of playing with aggression was witnessing growing numbers of fans for him in past. But once his mood becomes off he left the match there. A defeat from Pete in Wimbledon 1994 final is the best example of his moodiness where he was defeated 7-6 7-6 6-0. He did not play the 3rd set after his defeat in first 2 sets. On the other hand Pete was known for his uncanny ability to finish the game in his favor. He remains calm and cool till the end of the match. His technique and composure was outstanding which has earned such a huge popularity and fame around the world. This was believed that Pete was the best among the players the game had ever been produced. He also proved that by winning 14 grand slam titles. But it did not take a long time to change the views of those people who were saying Pete was the ever best. World witnessed another great compatriot in the name of Roger Federer soon after Pete hung up his boot. Roger added many scripts of his glory one after one in a very short span of time. Critics of this game don't have any clue to question his skill and technique. He is believed to surpass Pete's number of Grand Slam titles very soon which is 2 of sort this time. But see the uncertainty nature of the game which makes the game so beautiful. Here comes the indefatigable, skillful Rafa (Rafael Nadal) who is going to give the tough fight to Roger in coming days. Rafael's success in Wimbledon 2008 has written a new script for him as well as for international tennis. Though his dominance in Ronald Garros is not that much surprising (in past players like Thomas Muster, Gustavo kuerten dominated clay for some years), but his success story at All England Tennis Club may change the destiny of tennis. In past I saw some players who won French Open did not take part in Wimbledon because of their self assessment on grass. But first time I see a king of the clay wins on the grass defeating probably the best ever grass specialist who has been dominating on grass for last five consecutive years. I have very high respect for Roger's class of game but at the same time I'm going crazy for Rafa's indomitable approach and indefatigable efforts on courts. Now I believe sometime class has to admit the shrewdness of power acts. There are many interesting things to happen in future which can only beautify this game of uncertainty and unpredictability.

My first post

Hi all,

I'm going to be crazy and the reason is obvious. I'm going to write something and that is on my blog. Though as a web developer I have some years of experience dealing with technical aspects of online application, but I'm very new (you can say 'infant') to this kind of practice. I'm not sure whether my writings can contribute any worth to the crazy online blog community, but I'm very sure that I can find some friends who want to put their opinions on issues for which i seek their constructive suggestions.

I know my blog can never make that much hype that the blogs Amir Khan and Amitabh Bachan make. When they write something that becomes news and I can only seek my friend's opinions on that news through my blog. The main reason which drove me to create my own blog is to connect myself with some like minded people.

So friends your comments, suggestions, advices, criticism are always welcome.
